Book 13: Doom of the Last King

Book 13 announcement picture

Book 13 is the up and coming free content update for LotRO. On this page we will try and gather as much info as we can from interviews, previews and chat sessions. The update is expected in April 2008.

Known features and facts:Forochel Map

  • New region: Icebay of Forochel
    • Forochel is larger in both “visuals” and “space” compared to Evendim.
    • Land mass will be comparable to the North Downs in size.
    • Content will be aimed at level 44-50 and will compromise mostly small-fellowship and solo quests / mobs.
    • The area will feature a public level 50 dungeon
    • A “famous lore character” will be featured in Forochel
    • Lossoth are based on the hillmen, with warmer clothing. Lossoth will also be a new reputation faction in the game.
    • Three new armour sets in Forochel, based on the Lossoth
    • Features environemental influence: Frost damage gradually reduces your characters’ HP in certain areas, icecold water can kill your character.
    • First-time look at the Ocean!
    • The Lossoth faction is tied up with Metalsmithing and Leatherworking, and there will be two superior crafting facilities in the zone that you’ll need good faction to use
    • The main Lossoth town is slightly bigger than Aughaire, with smaller Lossoth villages throughout the zone
    • Initially Forochel will only be accessible through Evendim, but the faction swift travel routes will provide other methods
    • A new blizzard weather effect will be seen in Forochel
    • The Forochel region will have new, exclusive music
    • Forochel introduces six new monster types and a host of new monster skills. What are some of these new creatures? Players will encounter moose, winter-worms, and Gauredain war-mammoths, just to name a few. Stay tuned for more information on our other new monster types as we get closer to launching Book 13.”
  • Fishing, a long-promised feature will finally make an appearance in book 13
  • More swift travel routes will be added to existing stable-masters
  • New PVMP Monster Healing Class - Orc Defiler
  • Another Horse variant (mount)
  • Book 13 epic quests (storyline)
    • “Doom of the Last-king was a very fun part of the Epic storyline to write; bringing in the Lossoth against one of their ancient enemies, Angmar. We wanted our players to see and visit a number of important locations and people in Book 13, including the ancient Dwarf-mines, the ill-fated elf ship, and maybe even get a glimpse of an ancient spirit whose deeds remained unfulfilled. Hopefully the Book 13 epic will provide a few twists and turns that you won’t see coming!”
  • Improvements to Annúminas instances:
    • Accessibility
    • Accessibility is one of those issues, so in Book 13 we are providing a reputation gated travel route from Tinnudir to Echad Garthadir. This route will make it easier to get across Lake Evendim to this area.
    • We’ve also added a Milestone, just in case you’d like to recall here easily from any where in the world.
    • Flipping the Camps
    • Another problem is conveying better what is going on at the 3 camps found in Annúminas and how they relate to accessing the 3 instances there. What we’re doing is providing some in-game items to both Tinnudir and Echad Garthadir that, when examined, will help explain the current state of the events and how camp control affects instance accessibility.
    • We’ve also added some region broadcasts when the camps flip state, just to further let people know something is going on out in Annúminas.
    • Rally Points
    • We’ve also added a new Rally point for the Annúminas Tombs and Palace instances. This rally point will be on the island, so if you are defeated in one of those instances, you will not have to cross back over the bridge. This should make getting back into those instances a lot easier
    • Annúminas Quests
    • The biggest change coming is to the quests that go into Annúminas. We’ve decided to make those quests “dailies,” or quests that reset everyday. Since you can now do these everyday, we’ve removed the experience rewards and tweaked the other rewards a bit. Our hope though is that this will help you get more of the barter tokens, the “Arnorian Armour Fragments” and the “Battered Arnorian Armour” items, that you need for the armour sets.
    • Annúminas Barter Tokens
    • Due to the quest change above, we’ve decided to make the barter tokens bind on acquire. This means that you will no longer be able to trade them once Book 13 is available.
    • This means that if you’ve stored any of these items on Alts, you’ll want to send them to whatever character you want to eventually get the armour.
    • In addition, if you have any stored in your house, those items will be bound to the first character who picks them up from storage.
    • Items that are on the Auction House will be, again, bound to the first person who receives them in their inventory.
    • If the items are in your Vault, they will be bound to your character when you take them from the Vault.
  • New emotes!
  • New lore-master pet
  • A number of Armour sets that were only available for quests post-book 12 in Angmar, will be included on vendors in the region.
