Lord of the Rings: Conquest announced!
Thursday, May 8th, 2008

It is official. IGN has just released news about Pandemic’s latest game, which is Lord of the Rings: Conquest.

The high-level pitch is this basically fantasy Battlefront. This is everything that you’ve wanted to do in the Lord of the Rings universe’s battles but have never been able to before. We’ve basically set up a series of systematic battles where we re-create these battlefields from the film and then throw the player in the middle of it and let them figure out how they want to accomplish their objectives and how they want to win the battle, much like they did in Battlefront.

Conquest will feature every single battle from the movies, including Helms Deep, Minas Tirith, Pelennor Fields, The Black Gate, and even missions taken place in The Mines of Moria, Weathertop, and The Shire.

IGN: Are the extra battles that you’re talking about that weren’t in the movies, are those from the books or are they things that you created on your own?Eric Gewirtz: Some are from the books and some are fictitious. In the books they refer to going back to the Mines of Moria and cleaning it out, so we kind of elaborated on that. Because we have the ability to access from the books and the films (we have the rights to both for the video game), we’ve been able to expand on some of the fiction that was mentioned in the books. There’s stuff like Minas Morgul. It’s this really badass, evil castle that they showed from… it’s where the evil army launches their attack from in the films and you never get to see the inside of it. They never talk about it. In the books, they consider going and attacking and they decide not to on their way to the Black Gates, and in the films you just see it from the outside. We were able to model the entire inside of it and have this whole epic battle where the good forces are laying siege to Minas Morgul.

IGN: I’m assuming that, aside from the standard mode, there’s some sort of free mode? Can you play whoever you want at any time?

Eric Gewirtz: Yeah. So we have the Campaign Mode — we have two full campaigns on either side. The good campaign pretty much faithfully follows the events of the films, but again with the systematic gameplay that allows you to play up the battles any way you choose. The evil campaign is unlocked afterwards, and that’s kind of a “what-if” scenario that assumes that Frodo failed in destroying the Ring. They hint at, both in the books and the films, that it would be very bad if Frodo were to fail, but they never really go into detail about exactly how Sauron would go about conquering Middle-Earth.

We let you live out that kind of dark fantasy of being Sauron and his forces at the end of the film. You start out as a Ringwraith and you catch Frodo and deliver the Ring to Sauron, and then it launches this evil campaign where you’re basically conquering through Middle-Earth, playing as all the evil forces. You get to ride the Oliphant, you get to ride these Wargs, play as the Balrog and Sarumon and the Witch-King and the Ringwraiths and Sauron himself. Those are our two Campaign Modes.

In addition, though, we have a ton of Instant Action Modes that are playable in single-player, split-screen and online play. We have Conquest, which is capturing of control points like you did in Battlefront, we have Capture the Flag, we have Deathmatch, we have Hero Deathmatch where everyone gets to play as a hero; just a massive hero battle and we have a bunch of other cool modes. We’re still exploring some other modes, but one mode that we just kind of stumbled onto that’s really fun and kind of in line with the universe is called Ring Bearer. One player is Frodo and the other players are Ringwraiths and the longer you stay alive as Frodo, the more points you get until a Ringwraith finds you and kills you. The first Ringwraith to finally find the player, to find and kill Frodo, becomes Frodo, so it’s kind of this game of tag where you’re trying to stay alive as long as you can as Frodo, and you’ve got the Ring and you’ve got Sting and you’re trying to outsmart the other players.

The maps that these battle will take place in are huge as the game’s director Eric Gewirtz said. He said the Helm’s Deep map goes from outside Helm’s Deep to the Glittering Caves to inside the Throne room. Four basic classes will be in the game, which you will be able to chose from each mission. Gewitz stated that you can ride Oliphants or even be an Ent or a Troll.

It seems Online will be great with both 8-player single multiplayer as well as Co-op play up to four players(both online and slit screen). As mentioned above the online play will include several modes, including Conquest, Capture the Flag, Deathmatch, and Hero Deathmatch. In online you can play any variation of teams that you want from everyone being on one team and fighting AI or a evenly split 4 vs. 4.

So In closing this game looks to be amazing and I recommend that you check out the entire interview here.

Looks more than amazing...
zach:
Yes I am so excited i dont know what to do. And several people have doubts that it will come out in 2008. I am betting it will definatly see a 08 release, especially if you look how far it is. Gears of War 2 was just announced a month or so ago with a 08 release I do believe and it doesnt even have in-game footage yet.
zach:
Also so far IGN only has it on xbox 360 and PS3 so I dunno if its coming out on pc. It supports 4 player co-op and that is something u very rerly see on the pc.
m@tt:
It says PC in the article

"The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is set for release in the fall of 2008 and will hit the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC."
_Freek:
OMG

*Proceeds to reading article

So, uhm, after reading - still awesome. I think its too bad multiplayer is only 8 players, though. It sounds and looks like a great game. Can't wait to hear more about it!
zach:
Yea but its only 8 real players I believe. There will be lts of ai enemies i do believe.
_Freek:
Yeah, but still. 64 would've been better imho.
Alindur:
:omg: Looks sexy...
zach:
64 would have been amazing. 32 vs 32.
zach:
If you go to the main page there are 12 rings that represent missions so it looks like there will be 12 maps. I cant wait for this release!!!!!
_Freek:
Yeah, Id love to see some more locations though - especially open regions without buildings like Ithilien, but I guess that's more for later. Hopefully the site will get better - seeing as half of the ring icons are off for me.
zach:
Yea they are off thats for sure, and open forest regions would be sweet. I would be awesome to play as a ranger!!!
m@tt:
Shire
Weathertop
Rivendell
Moria
Isengard
Helms Deep
Minas Tirith
Pelannor Fields
Osgilliath
Minas Morgul
Mt Doom
Black Gate

So what could be added
Fords of Isen
Fangorn
Edoras
Lorien
Amon Hen
Shelobs Lair
Ithilien
Ports of Pelagir

I was hoping for some War in the North action too... Lorien, Esgaroth, Realm of Thranduil, Erebor, Carrock, Dol Guldur etc, but oh well. Maybe, after The Hobbit shows these locations in the film, there will be a sequel?
_Freek:
They have the same book rights EA used for BfME2, so any location in the North will be possible too.

These locations sound like the most interesting and necessary. Again, I think non-fortress locations like the few you mentioned would be great. Edoras will also be missed seeing as I figure Rohan will not be featured on as many other maps.
zach:
Yea i am sure there will be Conquest part 2 for the Hobit times or at least I hope there is.
zBeasty:
ahhhhhhhh!!!! I only just found out about this and holy crap am I excited! I really hope multilayer is more than 8, then its a garaunteed buy for me.(not that it wasn't already... :P ) I like how much they empathized the size of the maps, this is really exciting on a level of its own. 8D
zach:
Well i have heard 16 as well as the player cap. We should know shortly whether its 8 or 16.
HMMcKamikaze:
If the cap is going to be that low then the fighting system will have to be much more extensive (which it sounds like it should be from the description so far) and the ai will have to be pretty smart.
_Freek:
Yes - especially when many battles will be about sieges and there will be a bunch of special attacks. Although this is more or less scriptable in singleplayer it will be a task that needs to be done right in multiplayer.
TokyoBlade:
Looks good so far, but there needs to be a lot more than 16 online players tbh :P
zach:
Well it was 8 now its 16. 16 is fine for me as you will have more than a 100 AI too so it will be a massive battle!!
_Freek:
I'm wondering how high the CPU requirements are going to be :P
Wuzaa-man:
Holy ******* ****!

This is what I've always wanted from a LOTR game tbh :P

Guess this is pretty much what we anticipated. And I still remember the talks of a game like this from ages ago :D

(btw, why isn't f***ing censored properly?)

:wtf: You must have super-internet that Bill Gates has refused to allow. And a super-CPU that he has also banned. But thanks to Freek we can now put Microsoft out of business!!! :mec:
zach:
Yea 64 people would lag like crazy. Now if everyone had T1, then mabey.
_Freek:
Why?

It works and has worked on every other multiplayer FPS out there for years.
zach:
but as games get better more data must be communicated. Plus these maps are supposed to be HUGE, and if they afre as big as they say pc's will already have enouggh trouble running it. lol
zBeasty:
maybe it will be 2D!! :)
TokyoBlade:
You obviously haven't seen the screenshots :P
zach:
Yea there have been lots of talk about the graphics but I am fine with them.
Lotrbiggestfan:
those are just early screens though right? they will get better
_Freek:
Hopefully, and I bet they will. I figure optimizing distance graphics (close up looks fine) will come later on and they just had to push out these screens early.

Just look at BfME1. Well the graphics actually got worse there, but you all remember those über screenshots of a very high-poly troll in the grass, ents picking off peices of ruins etc.

Shows how much a game and its graphics can change over just a few months.
zach:
Yea i am sure they will change.
