The Hobbit: Cast Update
Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Now as many of you know, many actors that had a role in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy are getting pulled back to play a role in the upcoming film the hobbit. But get ready to see some new faces.

There have been many rumours floating around that James McAvoy has got the role of Bilbo Baggins, during a press release he has denied the rumors.

It’s not true by the way, it’s all internet rumoring and nothing else I’m afraid, Sorry.

Doug Jones says he would play a hemorrhoid if he got a chance to have a role in The Hobbit movie. Doug has stared in Hellboy as Abe Sapian and also in Hellboy 2, as well as playing “The Pale Man” in Pans Labyrinth. Doug also recently hinted to MTV news about his role.

There’s been lots of speculation. I wouldn’t want to ruin anything. Guillermo creates things with me in mind and he’s got a better image of what I can do than I do. However, there might be an elf king, father of Legolas kind of character that I would love.

Other star’s that are returning from the original trilogy include Viggo Mortensen, who is set to play Aragorn, which is for FotR sequel. He is joined by Andy Serkis, with the role of Gollum, And Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf. Who will both be starring in the hobbit.

So Bilbo has yet to get a part, there is much speculation that Sir Ian Holm may return. Stay tuned.

It's good to see familiar faces, although I do not expect to see them all in the Hobbit, but rather in the second movie.
Teregond:
Yeh it will be good to see members of the cast returning but it will also be good to see some new faces, I hope they use English actors for the parts.
zach:
Yep, new people mixed with the old iconic stars will create a great atmosphere, both like the lotr movies but apart from them. Much like "The Hobbit" book. :)
Durrh:
I'm not sure I want to see Sir Ian Holm play Bilbo. He's 76 and Bilbo was considerably younger in The Hobbit than in FotR.

On a somewhat related note, I hope The Hobbit 2 will have Glorfindel in it.
zach:
Well ... Technically Bilbo is supposed to look the same in The Hobbit as FoTR before he gave Frodo the ring, as it pretty much stopped his aging.
Durrh:
The same? I thought he's supposed to be older, but not considerably so.

Besides, seeing Holm play the younger Bilbo AFTER I saw him play the older Bilbo would jerk me out of my immersion.

Yes I'm a tough customer :P
_Freek:
They won't use Holm to play the young Bilbo in the Hobbit. He might have been old for a Hobbit in FotR, but he was not immortal and would still have aged. He was very young when he want on his adventure with Gandalf, and would have looked more like Frodo did at the start of FotR.
zach:
Well if you count 50 as young. And for hobbits it wasnt they have about the smae lifespans as humans today.

I think he is supposed to be the narrator anyways ....
Durrh:
The average hobbit lives to be 100, although some reach 130 or so, whereas life expectancy for humans is 77. Frodo turned 33 on the same day that Bilbo turned 111, and 33 is coming of age for hobbits. 50 would be middle age.
zach:
No hobbits reached 130, Bilbo was the oldest at the time he turned 111.
_Freek:
In the books, Frodo was in his 50's when he left for the Ring quest. So Bilbo shoudl still look about as old as Frodo (alhtough Frodo wouldn't have aged much either once he started carrying the ring)
Teregond:
There was a hobbit that reached 130 actually, 'Old Took' I think he was called.
Tabbitha:
Although I loved the scenery filmed in NZ for LOTR,I hope they will use more of the English countryside for The Hobbit.

To film it in the actual named locations where possible would be so cool.
_Freek:
For as far as I know they are filming it all in NZ again.
