Latest reports are indicating that Sylvestor McCoy, who many may know by his role as Doctor Who in the late 80s and mid-90s, is set to be handed the role of Bilbo Baggins in the upcoming Hobbit movie(s). Speculation last year surrounded a different Doctor, as David Tennant was being tipped by many to be the likely successor to Ian Holmes for the upcoming prequel to Peter Jackson’s award-winning trilogy. As the report suggests, however, this new revelation regarding the lead role makes much more sense:

McCoy, at 66, was thought to be a major contender for Bilbo in Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy and his casting would be a major sign that casting is skewing a little older this time around as studios feel less of a need to scramble for certain viewer demographics. Tennant never seemed right, but McCoy?

It is important to note that this is pure speculation at the moment, and there has currently been no comment from Jackson or McCoy. One thing is for sure though: we’ll be sure to keep you updated on this rumour as it develops.

i could definitely see him being bilbo... just look at this picture http://mattcbr.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/101.jpg

Eomer the Young:

What about the actor who portrayed Bilbo in the trilogy? I'd like to see him reprise the role.

Dante:

I doubt Ian Holm, which is probably in his late 70s by now, is in any condition to reprise his role as a younger version of himself.

Ian Mcdiarmid did, but he's still pretty young as far as old people goes.

As for Mccoy, I wouldn't have any problems with him.

Mithrandir7:

You know, when I first saw this I thought it said Sylvester Stallone before I did a double take. :P

Got my hopes up, but I guess I'll have to settle. He DOES look a lot like Bilbo.

Eomer the Young:

It's too bad that Holm can't reprise the role, but his resemblance to McCoy is very noticeable. I'd be happy to have him as Bilbo.

He should be Bilbo....no doubt...

Arvedui:

Best Bilbo aside from a younger Ian Holm

Gandalf1106:

If we can't have Ian, this looks like a great choice. He could be Ian's brother. Anything less than looking this much like Ian, should warrant a digital Bilbo head.

However, I would definitely be fine with Mr. McCoy.

ElveHaldir:

The picture in the first post is very convincing and McCoy is a decent actor, so I'm really hoping this may be true.
However, that picture does look pretty old and McCoy is now in his sixties, so how much better of a choice would he be than Holm in his seventies? Even though make-up has had a pretty important role in the LOTR movies, I just can't see this happen.
I think this is just a rumour and Jackson and his casting crew are probably looking for someone younger (like they made Frodo younger in the movies).

Mithrandir7:

I looked through a couple of recent photographs, and he does seem too old to play the role.

Cheeky Hobbit:

I still think James McAvoy would be a pretty good choice.
