More promising news is surfacing regarding the production of The Hobbit. Although the movie has still not been officially greenlighted, Jackson has started making the rounds at various cities to meet with actors regarding The Hobbit. In addition, it is reported that a deal is quite imminent, as Ian McKellen predicted; however there are still concerns regarding the financial situation of MGM.
Sources say Jackson’s pact with Warner Bros. to direct the two-part “Hobbit” adaptation is close to done, but the sticking point continues to be the dire financial situation at MGM, which holds half the rights to the property.

I'm surprised that this pre-production hasn't been finished with already. Wasn't the movie announced about 2 or 3 years ago? I guess it will be a while before they finally get started on this. Good to see that they're making progress though.
Arctic Squirrel:
this is turning out bad.
there once was a Halo Movie in production that was being directed by Jackson. the whole movie was ready to start shooting, but some fatal flaw ended it. I'm getting scared.
Mithrandir7:
This was supposed to be good news :P
Aberrance:
I suppose this means the chances of Jackson not directing are slim...=[
Cheeky Hobbit:
So, let me get this straight:
1) MGM are in a 'dire financial situation' and so, naturally, are in need of financial assistance;
2) MGM owns half the rights to the property (i.e. The Hobbit);
3) The development of the two Hobbit films is still ongoing, but the aforementioned problems with MGM are proving to be an obstacle.
And yet there is no mention of them trying to sell the rights on. Why? They clearly need the extra money, and they can't really wait to reap the benefits because their very situation is likely to prevent that. I find it hard to believe that no single company will want to acquire the property's rights if it was to be up for grabs, even amidst the current global economic situation - The Hobbit is one of the few remaining franchises that would guarantee box-office success.
Are they not allowed to sell the rights on, or do they believe they can recover? I'm guessing it's the latter, as selling the rights would probably result in an even greater financial loss for them. Last I heard, Time Warner was the highest bidder.
Freek:
Yeah, I think WB/New Line should make an effort to buy the remainder of the 'the Hobbit' rights and just continue the film.
