E3 2010 has now started, and so has the no doubt bulkload of press coverage for the Lord of the Rings: War in the North. The first one is IGN, and they reveal some of the first details on the non-combat aspects of the game;

As a human, the wizard has one other advantage: he is the only one who can craft ingredients and combine items to create artifacts that can be used by members of the team.

(…)

It’s not all about combat. There are conversations with non-playable characters using a dialogue system similar to the one in Mass Effect and a heavy amount of customization available. This is a role-playing game after all. Though you may be locked in as a human wizard, that doesn’t mean you don’t control how your character progresses throughout the War in the North. Snowblind isn’t ready to talk about the skill trees or how character progression works, but they did flash the customization screen for a second and it looks pretty hardcore.

As it is now, it seems pretty much confirmed that race and class are directly related – Dwarves as Warriors, Humans as Wizards and Elves as Scouts. Check out the preview at IGN for more details. Also check out the War in the North live twitter feed on our homepage for the latest news and tidbits.

ElveHaldir:

My god, locked classes as in ... no human/elven melee fighter?
That just ... sucks :ehh:

The main point of making the LOTR RPG was to explore Middle-earth (still unconfirmed) and being able to create your own character and be who you'd like to be in Middle-earth. I see a lot of that fading away if you have to be a "wizard" when you're human, a warrior when you're a dwarf (the least bad) or an elven rogue.

I really hope that this choice was either just for the showcase or will be worked out very well; else I'll think that this game will disappoint many LOTR fans.

LOTR PO:

Come on! I want to have the choice to be an human warrior or elf warrior too, and dwarfes mages. I can't see why this should be a problem to make. That's something that I think is a must in a RPG-game, to have big choices. Not just big customizations. Otherwise it sounds good!

Cheeky Hobbit:

If what is implied, with Humans, Elves and Dwarves being set classes, is true... well, then they've kinda buggered proceedings up already, I'm with ElveHaldir on this one; I don't want to have to be a Dwarf to use melee combat, or be a Human to be able to be a magic class etcetera.

Each race should have their own unique traits and paths in the skill tree, but they shouldn't be limited to one class. Bad move, Snowblind. Bad move.

d3an-extreme:

I dont think you wont be locked to a human mage, elf ranger or dwarf warrior. I had a look back over the old OPM screens and there is clearly an elf mage and a human with a claymore, i think its just for that demo IGN had that they were set up as that.

Stephen:

...hugely revealing...

I don't much care for locked classes, but i don't think it's a huge obstacle for enjoying the game either.

Something i don't really understand, is these "unique" abilities, such as dwarf being able to see treasure. To me, they just seem a bit like a poor attempt to make classes seem unique.

zach:

Ahh man... bad news. I don't like this idea of locked classes at all.

Ilaras of The Dunedain:

.....your joking. :ehh: The excitement tide has just flipped for me...

Beradrin:

Wait a second. If I understood correctly, I will not be able to roleplay a "Dunedain Ranger" type of character ?? They have just destroyed my hopes to this game by making locked classes...

d3an-extreme:

i think its just that demo they saw that the characters were preset, look at this picture, there clearly is an elf mage on the bottom image in the middle

ElveHaldir:

Or it could be an NPC, aiding you in your quests ...
We'll just have to wait and see and hope they chose character AND class customization :)

Balin38:

Locked classes isn't a deal breaker for me but I would wonder why they chose to do that, if it's true.

d3an-extreme:

still, they would be unlikely to have an elf mage npc fight alongside you and then not allow you to be one.

LOTR PO:

Shouldn't we seen any gameplay from E3 by now?

Cheeky Hobbit:

I would have thought so. Almost every game at E3 has had a demonstration with sites such as IGN, Gamespot etc. All except War in the North, it would seem.

d3an-extreme:

was wondering that myself, i really hope they let us see the demo at least =/

d3an-extreme:

sounds pretty good in that preview

LOTR PO:

Still no videos of the demo? I'm dissapointed, and I haven't seen any new interviews with them either. E3 is over and nothing. Too bad!

LOTR PO:

I was thinking, in the teaser a human warrior were shown. So very likely, it was only in the demo the classes were locked, and in the real game you will have the choice. If not, it's weird and disappointing.

sacrilege83:

Well it's not unlike snowblind to have locked classes to a particular race. Those who have played Champions or Baldur's Gate DA should know this. Hell I wouldn't be upset if they had made WitN like Champions with much improved visuals. To each their own.

FaceCake:

this makes no sense. the first video to come out for War in the North shows a man running through the forest with a sword killing orcs. He in no way appears to be a wizard, so im not concerned about locked classes at all.
