After only about 14 months in service, EA is already shutting down the dedicated servers for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Lord of the Rings: Conquest. Conquest is only a small part of the massive list of games whose servers will be shut down in the coming months, however most games who servers are being shut down include several year old sports games.

Conquest is scheduled to go offline on March 16, 2010. For those who still play Conquest you better enjoy the online play while it lasts. For those interested in a send off game, just post here and we can see if we can get a group together to play a final game!

Ilaras of The Dunedain:

I used to play it online a lot, not so much anymore. Still sucks to see it go.

TokyoBlade:

haha, that didn't last long :P

Yams In a can:

Nooooo..... I still play it... :(

Heron:

This is exactly why console gamers should be worried that they can't set up their own servers. This is exactly why PC gamers love being able to run their own dedicated servers.

This is why PC gamers think console gamers are insane for deciding publisher-controlled servers are just fine.

This is why so many PC gamers were angry that Modern Warfare 2 didn't have dedicated servers.

When the publisher controls all the servers, they get to decide how long you get to play a game, and there's nothing you can do about it. It's why I don't like that kind of game.

zach:

Yea I agree it was cool thought that Pandemic released PS3 and PC dedicated servers. Although if EA didn't decide to be punks and have to use THEIR servers 360 gamers would still have an option as Xbox is just now stopping their servers for Xbox 1 games. So because EA is stupid the 360 no longer has online.

kylej13:

I wish I could say that I was sad, but I'm not, really. Every time I come back to the game, I can only stand a few minutes before being reminded of how much the game sucked and stop playing. Why did you have to make such a horrible game with such a good idea, Pandemic?!

ChasePig:

OH NO!! That is so upsetting. I love that game and it is my favorite 360 game despite what everyone says about it. I still play online all the time and I will probably get rid of that game if I cant play online, the only fun thing to do with that game. This really stinks!!

The problem is not just the servers shutting down (as Zach said, there are dedicated server packages for hosting PS3 and PC servers) but all the services as well. Which means they're also shutting down the servers that allow you to sign into your EA account, keep stats and which keeps a list of all the dedicated servers OTHER people are hosting.

The same happened to Tiberian Sun, which, as an RTS game did not use dedicated servers. A third party made a deal with EA however, and now instead hosts the servers which allow people to communicate, start their own server and keep stats. Not that I see that happening for Conquest, let alone any console game.

guilemaster:

wow this sucks. I actually still play this game every now and then. Well it was good while it lasted. If only it had come out a few years sooner, when LOTR was still a big part of the media...

Yams In a can:

You are able to set up public games on the PS3 version, right? How do you do it?

kylej13:

With Battlefield, COD, and Fifa, I won't be missing Conquest online too much, although I have a whole lot less reasons to keep it now.

For_Dol_Amroth:

i wasnt a fan of conquest, too much chaos for me i prefer BFME which i hope isnt going to have it's servers disconnected for 360.

zach:

BFME for the 360 isn't on the list, and I guess that shows how little conquest was liked when an RTS several years old survives MUCH longer.

Granted BFME on the 360 is actually pretty fun, and if mods and custom maps were available I wouldn't mind playing it on the 360 more often.

Arvedui:

Its a sad thing to hear. I never had the conquest experience. Probably won't get to. Oh well.

ChasePig:

This really is my favorite game on the Xbox 360. It is so upsetting. We might as well just get rid of the game because there is no reason to play it because the AI are obviously horrible but that is the same with every game. Just sad to see my favorite game die

witchkingshour:

I just wish Battle for middle earth on the 360 had a updated patch.. But still not a bad game to be honest... As for Conquest, it doesn't bother me.. The game sucked anyway... I just totally wanted to rip my hair out everytime i played it..

Bareandir:

Finally, die crappy game die!!
Return from the dark and griddy cave you came from!

SSSSS:

Why? We love it !!!!!!!

In that case, you sir, havent got a clue what a good game look like if sat in front of your face.

guilemaster:

@ Bareandir
Hey everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. I know plenty of people who liked the game. I didn't hate it that much, it was alright while it lasted.

Yams In a can:

The game is only fun with online. Does this news mean that the public games will also be closed?

With a risk of sounding like a 5-year old child, I saw his post as a reply to my comment = he started it :).

roytjuh:

So, we paid $60,- for a game. And now their closing the online-feature?

The snowking:

Thats about it.

Ilaras of The Dunedain:

Does anyone suspect a closing of BFME1&2?

Heron:

There's no indication they'll shut down the multiplayer components of BfME1 or 2.

However, BfME1 did its multiplayer through Gamespy, I think, so that's not in EA's control anyway.

At any rate, don't both games support LAN games?

The snowking:

Imagine if gamespy shut down their servers.

I think only the PS3 one does.

Heron:

Uh... why would the PS3 version support LAN, but not the PC version? That's crazy talk.

*pulls out BfME, BfME II, and C&C3 manuals*

BfME: yep.
BfME II: yep.
C&C3: yep.

All three games support LAN play. (I included C&C3 because it uses the same engine as the earlier two games.)

necrowizardking:

for all you guys and girls who still enjoy playing conquest like me and so many others there is a online petition you all can sign to help make them change their mind. just go to www.petitiononline.com/conquest/petition.html we need all the help we can get so spread the word everyone.

Heron:

As good as petitions are, they're not going to get a company like EA to change their mind. For example, there's a Starcraft 2 LAN petition, where people are asking Blizzard to put LAN play back in Starcraft 2, and it has almost 250,000 signatures.

I somehow doubt you'll be able to get 250,000 people signing a petition for Conquest; the whole reason EA shut down the servers was that "the games scheduled for shutdown in March and April 2010 represent less than 0.3% of all peak online players across all EA titles." That means very, very few people have actually been playing Conquest.

If 250,000 people can't get Blizzard to put LAN play back in Starcraft 2, then "less than 0.3%" of EA's player base will have no luck getting the Conquest servers back online.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but there's really no hope...

jojobaker:

Actually apparently Ea may change their mind as one of the players was told if he could get 1000 signatures they'd keep them going. I don't really know how accurate it is, but it is worth a try. We're at about 750 at the moment. All the help will be appreciated.

Balin38:

If I were EA, I'd abandon Conquest's servers and focus on their more recent projects, Bad Company 2 for instance.

Which is what they are doing.... :P

Balin38:

damn straight and good thing too!

Yams In a can:

Good, because I just got Bad Company 2 :D. I also play Conquest... still XD XD XD How ironic! XD

Ilaras of The Dunedain:

I'll be playing for the last time tonight as scheduled. :-^

Unregistered:

Lmaooo i ent buying another EA game now lmaooo

Eomer the Young:

Conquest was a terrible game. Shutting down the servers only makes sense. I realize those that did play online will feel sad about this, but honestly I just don't think it would serve any point to EA to keep running online services.

Dude:

For the guys who would still play Conquest I'd like to say that you are able to lay conquest on 5 dedicated servers via Tunngle, at the moment for PC only.

Just install tunngle, search at newtworks for conquest and join the lobby, then start Conquest and search for local games, have fun and enjoy it!

More infos at:

Looking forward to more players
