The Lord of the Rings trilogy is releasing on Blu-ray coming April 6th. A quick round trough the boards and the comments over at the product page at Amazon will have us believe that this release is nothing but another attempt to cash in on the franchise, especially as the extended edition isn’t expected until 2012. Are you getting LotR on blu-ray? Waiting for the extended release? Sound off in the poll on the home page and tell us your thoughts in the comments.

No, I have not enough money to let it make sense to buy it. I have already the Extended Edition on DVD and I have a 19" TV. So the difference also isn't big enough. Mayby I will download him in 720P, but i'm not going to buy it.
TokyoBlade:
I'm waiting for the Extended Edition to come out on Blu-Ray, so no I won't be getting it ;)

I'll probably buy it on Blu-ray, but I'll definitely wait for the extended edition. Besides, I don't have a blu-ray player yet...
Ilaras of The Dunedain:
1. Don't have a blu-ray player
2. I would want to get the extended editions first if I were to get the trilogy on blu-ray.
Soooo, probably not for a while :P
Aragorn_Elessar:
No, It wouldnt be the same without the extended scenes.
Edheldae:
Waiting for extended.
witchkingshour:
I probably will just to have it..
LOTR PO:
I just don´t understand why keep the Extended Editions back for years! Whats the point? I don´t think they will sell more Theatrical Versions than if they release both versions at the same time, I guess they would sell even better if they released them at the same time. I just think it´s so dumb, and I don´t think that it´s only me who thinks this is silly.
PS: I´ll wait until the Extended Editions comes out.
Heron:
It's not that they're deliberately keeping it back, it's that it takes a lot of effort to put together extended edition discs in a new format. There's encoding to do, there's menus to write, there's artists to hire to do new menu graphics, etc etc etc.

A whole lot apparently.

Well probably a combination of time needed and an market opportunity. Yes it will take more time so they decide to go ahead and wait til the Hobbit's release to give the Extended Edition even more of a boost.
Freek:
Not to mention that with a year/two year gap there's a bigger chance people will buy both standard and extended edition BD's

Mithrandir7:
No doubt in my mind that the reason for the delay in release is that The Hobbit will create excitement in the franchise again.. but what Freek mentioned makes sense as well.
I probably will buy this release though, I love Blu-Ray :)

They can't just transfer from the film to blu-ray, that wouldn't work ;) There's a lot of post-processing that was done.
What they do need to do is re-master the entire trilogy for HD, rather than DVD. It's not an insurmountable task, but it is time-consuming. Plus they'll probably add in some extra features taking advantage of some of the other stuff blu-ray discs are capable of.

well either way, to me it doesnt matter ill most likely be waiting for the EE instead of buying the release
