The lawsuit between New Line Cinema and J.R.R. Tolkien’s children has finally been settled. Many news sites, including The New York Times, have reported that both parties have reached an agreement. Although specifics of the settlement were undisclosed and remain unknown, those representing the Tolkien estate had claimed that they were owed $150 million from the movies. So, it’s safe to say that they received a good portion, if not all, of what was owed.
The lawsuit had Lord of the Rings fans worried that Warner Bros., which now owns New Line Cinema, would lose the rights to continue production of the Hobbit film and also the film filling the gap between the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the Ring. However, this settlement will bring great joy to all who had those fears, for Christopher Tolkien stated that “The settlement clears the way for New Line to proceed with its plans for two new films based on ‘The Hobbit.’ ”
So for all you Middle-earth Center readers, stay tuned and expect to hear a lot more from us regarding development of the two new movies as it becomes known.

Great news! Now we can hopefully get a final confirmation that the movie is green-lit and fully underway.
zach:
Yep. I know they have prolly been holding out information as it would look bad in court if Warner Bros. had given the movie a green-light and announced a bunch of cast.
