According to IGN, Lord of the Rings fans will now be able to view the whole motion picture trilogy in high definition, as it is going to be released on Blu-ray disc. New Line Home Entertainment has set November 3, 2009 as the release date for the complete box set, which includes all three movies directed by Peter Jackson. Along with this, the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) is said to be set at just under $100 USD.

For now, nothing much else is known regarding any new or special content that wasn’t included with the older DVD set. However, it will probably have at least all of the content and special features that we’ve already seen. The biggest thing, however, is that fans will finally be able to watch the their favorite scenes in breathtaking detail and clarity.
When more details come out, we’ll have them here!

Well I have watched the HD version before, but I dont think it was the Special Extended Version. Is this version the complete edition or simply HD of the normal DVDs?

Wow. That's going to be awesome. It'll be another excuse to get my wife to let me buy a PS3.
Thorgaz:
Does anyone else have anything to add or correct here?
Ilaras of The Dunedain:
Awesome, now I just need to really get a Blue-ray player....
zach:
Actually DVD's are in 480P I do believe.
Balin38:
That sounds cool.
Be right back just buying a blu ray player and a HD tv :P
It would only be worth getting if it was the Extended Version.
el kevo:
$100 is actually pretty cheap for 3 Blu-Rays. However I have a very suspicious mind to believe that 2 months after this release they'll announce the extended versions on blu-ray. I'd say hold off for a bit when they're released.
I don't mean to advertise but now if you don't have a PS3 you need to get one ;). It is the best blu-ray player on the market and it plays video games. A perfect combination
Mithrandir7:
Since I don't have a BluRay player, but my best friend does, I'm gonna try and convince him to get this so I can watch it haha. :P
TokyoBlade:
If they aren't the extended version of the films, I'm not getting it :P
Freek:
These are not the extended edition. And Zach, DVD and Digital TV in SD is 480i ;)
LOTR PO:
anyone who knows something about when the extended editions are coming out ?

"The Lord of the Rings (Extended Editions)" is scheduled to be released on Blu-ray in 2011 or 2012.
zach:
Yea I knew it was 480 something. :P
That sucks that its not the Extended Edition. I guess by then maybe the PS3 will be $200, so I may get the E.E. when it comes out.

You could always get a BD player without the console, would be no more then $199... its worth the investment, I havent bought DVD's since I got my PS3. That being said, I already own the EE trilogy set on DVD so I'm waiting for that BD edition :)
zach:
Yea but there are a couple PS3 games I would like to play...
Slavic:
Yes, the plan's to release it precisely before The Hobbit hits the theaters.
P.S. You watch movies...using a gaming console?!?
Ilaras of The Dunedain:
Indeed....

Well if you have a PS3 there really is no point in having a blu-ray player unless u have two HD-tvs, in that case give me some money. :P

zach:
I was joking. :P You could always move the PS3 between TV's. Regardless for only $100 more I would personally recommend a PS3 as the cheaper Blu-rays dont connect to the internet so u cant get firmware updates, which actually means something with Blu-ray as opposed to DVD.
