According to IGN, Lord of the Rings fans will now be able to view the whole motion picture trilogy in high definition, as it is going to be released on Blu-ray disc. New Line Home Entertainment has set November 3, 2009 as the release date for the complete box set, which includes all three movies directed by Peter Jackson. Along with this, the MSRP (manufacturer’s suggested retail price) is said to be set at just under $100 USD.

Box art for the Blu-ray set

For now, nothing much else is known regarding any new or special content that wasn’t included with the older DVD set. However, it will probably have at least all of the content and special features that we’ve already seen. The biggest thing, however, is that fans will finally be able to watch the their favorite scenes in breathtaking detail and clarity.

When more details come out, we’ll have them here!

I come from a somewhat backward area, so pardon if I sound stupid, but what does that precisely mean (in High Definition)?

zach:

Well I have watched the HD version before, but I dont think it was the Special Extended Version. Is this version the complete edition or simply HD of the normal DVDs?

if I understand your question correctly, high definition means that the picture is clearer, the sound is crisper, basically it is better all around

from what I understood of the article, yes it would be the special extended version

Heron:

Wow. That's going to be awesome. It'll be another excuse to get my wife to let me buy a PS3.

High definition or HD is used to denote the quality of the picture when watching any sort of video feed. The numbers used to quantify what sort of definition a video has are listed in pixels. The number of pixels wide the video is will be listed first, and the number of pixels tall will be listed second. So if a video's quality is listed as 320x240 (the size of most youtube videos) that means that the image is 320 pixels wide, and 240 tall. Now to get into DVDs and BluRay. Usually by market standards, an image size has to be above 1280x720 to be listed as HD. For short, that size is listed as 720p. The "p" standing for progressive scanning, which means that the entire image is refreshed every new frame, rather than "i" (used for larger footage) which means interlaced scanning: every other lateral line of pixels is refreshed each frame. To put these numbers in perspective, in general old VHS tapes used 640x480, most DVDs use 720p (1280x720), and BluRay is 1920x1080 (either 1080p or 1080i). I'm not sure what resolution (image size) movie theatres use, but it's not as large as what BluRays use. So if you were to watch the new LOTR BluRays on a good TV (that uses 1080p or 1080i) you'd be getting a highe resolution that in theatres.

Does anyone else have anything to add or correct here?

Ilaras of The Dunedain:

Awesome, now I just need to really get a Blue-ray player....

zach:

Actually DVD's are in 480P I do believe.

Balin38:

That sounds cool.

Be right back just buying a blu ray player and a HD tv :P

It would only be worth getting if it was the Extended Version.

el kevo:

$100 is actually pretty cheap for 3 Blu-Rays. However I have a very suspicious mind to believe that 2 months after this release they'll announce the extended versions on blu-ray. I'd say hold off for a bit when they're released.

I don't mean to advertise but now if you don't have a PS3 you need to get one ;). It is the best blu-ray player on the market and it plays video games. A perfect combination

Mithrandir7:

Since I don't have a BluRay player, but my best friend does, I'm gonna try and convince him to get this so I can watch it haha. :P

TokyoBlade:

If they aren't the extended version of the films, I'm not getting it :P

Freek:

These are not the extended edition. And Zach, DVD and Digital TV in SD is 480i ;)

LOTR PO:

anyone who knows something about when the extended editions are coming out ?

Yea I knew it was 480 something. :P

That sucks that its not the Extended Edition. I guess by then maybe the PS3 will be $200, so I may get the E.E. when it comes out.

Lol by then the Xbox720 and PS4 are probably out and have BD :)

You could always get a BD player without the console, would be no more then $199... its worth the investment, I havent bought DVD's since I got my PS3. That being said, I already own the EE trilogy set on DVD so I'm waiting for that BD edition :)

zach:

Yea but there are a couple PS3 games I would like to play...

Slavic:

Yes, the plan's to release it precisely before The Hobbit hits the theaters.

P.S. You watch movies...using a gaming console?!?

Yea, would be silly to get an extra BD player since my PS3 already has one, no?

Oh, well yeah, but actually getting one just for movies is what I had in my mind. :D

zach:

Well if you have a PS3 there really is no point in having a blu-ray player unless u have two HD-tvs, in that case give me some money. :P

Loads of people have 2 or more HD-tvs :P You don't need to be rich these days to get an HD-tv ;) I have 2 myself - a 37" Toshiba 1080p HDTV and a Samsung 32" HDTV (not 1080p though) and I don't consider myself to be rich :P

zach:

I was joking. :P You could always move the PS3 between TV's. Regardless for only $100 more I would personally recommend a PS3 as the cheaper Blu-rays dont connect to the internet so u cant get firmware updates, which actually means something with Blu-ray as opposed to DVD.
