As you may have heard, Warner Bros. itself now has a license to publish and develop games based on the Lord of the Rings films. Where EA previously used this license to create Arcade, Action and Strategy games, the RPG genre (aside from the MMORPG “The Lord of the Rings: Online”) has been missing from the impressive list of Lord of the Rings games.

An inside source at Electronic Arts now tells us that Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Electronic Arts to pick up ‘the White Council’. Back in 2006, EA put this project “on hold” due to “management problems”. An open world RPG, not dissimilar to games like ‘The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion’, this project was the most anticipated Lord of the Rings games of all, and its cancellation was to the dismay of  many many fans.

Our source now tells us that Warner Bros. is very interested in this project and would like to pick up the work that has been done thus far and continue developement themselves. Since the project entailed some technology used in games such as ‘the Sims 2′ (AI) it would seem that Warner Bros. would mainly be redoing the actual game itself, but reusing the concepts and ideas as layed out by EA Redwood Shores over two years ago. If anything, this means that WB is very interested in the Open World RPG genre, which is good news for us all.
