This rumor has been floating around since Turbine started hiring console developers. The original post was made on April 1, but Joystiq personally contacted Turbine regarding the rumor.

Recently Saul Zaentz let go that a new Lord of the Rings games will hopefully be out this fall. It is known that Turbine wants to release a new expansion pack every year, but these expansion packs are not likely to be what Saul Zaentz was referring to. The rumor mill has been re-stirred as of late, with news that Turbine is nearly done with Lotr:O for the Xbox 360. However when contacted by Joystiq about the rumors here, Adam Mersky had some interesting news to report.

We contacted Turbine for comment and spoke with its director of public relations, Adam Mersky. “We saw that rumor, too,” he told us, adding, “We’re not talking about what we’re working on specifically, only that we’re making a console MMO and actively working with Microsoft and Sony.”

Mersky said Turbine is “making good progress” on the title, but any rumors that a console version of LOTRO is close to finished are false. “We plan to make more noise in a couple of months,” he responded when asked about its plans to unveil the title. Will it be at E3? “We’ll definitely have something to show by summer,” said Mersky.

As both a player of the Lord of the Rings: Online and a console gamer, I would welcome LOTRO on consoles. E3 can’t come any sooner!

sounds awesome. but would you have to pay for the subscription of the online game as well as live. then i wouldn't buy it.

zach:

Well most likely it would be available to silver members and you would pay the same fee as pc users. Kinda like the FF MMO on the 360.

Sweeeet thanks for providing this information zach!

zach:

Happy to help. :)

Lotr Lover:

Sweet lol..that would be a dream come true! no lag on 360! i wonder if u could use a gamecard? then itll be sweet otherwise ill use computer! and i wonder if ull be aloud to transfer characters on to the 360?

zach:

What I am hoping is that they are totally connected. The 360 supports keyboard but I dunno about mouse... which could be added rather easy. Although there is a program to play WoW with only a 360 gamepad so hopefully turbine will do that. Plus people like voice chat over text... I know as I always use text and I am about the only one who uses it. Even with a kb/mouse its easier to use voice especially in battles to chat is not a problem. But I have like 20 skills I use oretty often. Dunno how they will set that up. Although with a controller I think character movement would actually be better. So pretty much my only problem is how are they gunna make the UI so that you can quickly access all the skills. The direction pad easily allows 8 ... but thats not much.

Freek:

I would get it for the PS3. Though, I wouldn't (and don't expect they will) like keyboard/mouse controls. I suspect that there may not be the possibility to play with other console owners MAYBE between PS3 and 360, but not PC (due to control/balance issues)

zach:

Well actually Lotr:O is mostly PvE. If they did the controls right you could probably tell a person was using a controller, but probably not too much. It SHOULD have console specific Monster Play though. Since in PvP having hotkeys can help a lot. In PvE its not near as big of deal.

Cheeky Hobbit:

Sounds to me as though Microsoft is trying to set it up so that Xbox Live users will not have to pay a monthly subscription on top of their Xbox Live subscriptions. In all honesty, that's the only way I'd ever buy an MMO for my 360 because the cost would be ridiculous otherwise - not even a LoTR MMO is worth that amount of money.

zach:

Its no different than playng lotro on pc and having xbox Live... which I do. :)

I really hope my lifetime subscription works though :)

Well, it's not really the same thing though is it? I shouldn't have to pay a monthly subscription on top of my Xbox Live membership, especially as I'm paying for the game itself anyway. It's different for the PC and, to a certain extent, PSN because you aren't paying for your online service (the internet doesn't exactly count).

Playing LoTRO on PC and having Xbox Live may cost the same as having LoTRO on the 360 - it's the same in that regard - but the principle is entirely different because LoTRO on PC and having Xbox Live are two separate things.

zach:

It IS the same thing though as your Xbox Live subscription goes to MS and your Lotr:O subscription goes to Turbine. Turbine could not function the way it does without these subscription fees, they wouldnt be able to give the free updates nor make expansions near as fast. As for paying for Xbox Live, thats another debate, totally unrelated.

Now I would rather have a monthly fee that is shared between the 360 and PC, with totaly integration between consoles and pc. That is you play your character on your friends PS3 and then I go home pick up where I left off on my xbox 360 then later I am on my pc and play from where i left on my 360. Total integration between the three systems.

However what you are asking for: No subscription fee from Turbine, that would only be possible, given they make every Book update a DLC that costs money OR expansion packs that are priced at the full price of a retail game. Personally i prefer a universal subscription or even a 360 on subscription because ALL my money goes to Turbine, that way retailers dont get nearly 1/3 or 1/4 of the profits from every game sold.

Ranger of the Numenor:

Look at it like its been before, back in the day people payed 15 dollars a month to play Final Fantasy 11, plus the annual fees to play online as well as the purchase of the game.

LotRO is not going to be free, not even on XBL, since its not going to be using Microsoft's servers :( However, that may make it possible to play on Live Silver.

PSN doesn't have this issue since you don't have to pay for online anyway, but the info thus far doesn't point to a PS3 release being likely to happen...

I.m pretty sure it will end up being allowed to be used with Silver and as for a PS3 release. All the rumor talk about the xbox 360, but who knows. Turbine may even reduce the price to $10 permanently??

Lotr Lover:

it might be like age of conan..hopefully not..the subscription stacked on the xbox live bill and screwed everything up..hopefully something along the lines of wat zach said! it would be hard with controller but who knows just hve to wait and see!

zach:

Rumors say Turbine wants to make it free to play, most likely making money off DLC.

Lotr Lover:

good point! im not even sure i wanna play it on xbox! like ill get it but i wudnt play it alot on xbox..i like computer better and with a gaming computer im getting ill rather play computer

jojobaker:

IF it would be free for subscription then I'll definitly consider buying this if it does come out.

That sounds really cool, would definately get me playing lotro again if they did that, i like to come and go now and again so kinda felt like i was wasting money on subs. Wouldnt mind paying extra money for the game of the shelf even, like £60 instead of the normal £40 price tag for xbox games.

Samus1111111:

I would personally prefer to have it remain on the comp. (mainly because I don't have either an xbox or a PS3 ), but if they did move it to a console, I would then just shell out the cash and get one :P

Morrow:

yeah I read about this, I would acutally prefer to play a game like Lotro on my 360 than on on pc which is kinda weird! :P

Lotr Lover:

something else i realized about this rumor is if it happens LOTRO will get A LOT MORE players! i hve friends that dont like the game but if it comes out for xbox theyll get it, because they like xbox and hate computer games

SoraStrife:

I hope you realize Turbine has insisted that this is for a seperate project, and that LotRO is remaining a PC only game. Every last word of this is nothing more than fantasy and Hearsay
