Gameplayer has published its review of The Lord of the Rings: Conquest, and its verdict is mixed to say the least.

While die-hard Tolkienophiles will doubtless find something to go rabid over with Conquest, the average gamer may find themself slightly disappointed with this offering. It just feels too much like Battlefront with a new lick of paint, rather than a groundbreaking improvement of an aging formula. If you plan on going into Conquest with single player action on your mind, you may find the plot to be an afterthought, and the gameplay overly repetitive.

Conversely if you like nothing better than banding together with some online mates, coordinating strategies, driving your enemies before you and listening to their (13 year old) lamentations – LOTR Conquest might keep you amused, for a while.

+ Authentic character designs
+ Great hero classes and ‘mounts’
- ‘Been there done that’ gameplay
- Utilitarian graphics
- Presentation lacks polish

Verdict: “Conquest is like sex: good with other people, mildly entertaining solo, shortness is a problem.”

6.5/10

The full review can be found here. The Lord of the Rings: Conquest is already available in the US, and is set to be released worldwide on January 16th.

Pretty much what I was expecting. Actually, even worse in places. I am a single-player player, if it's got a crap campaign, then that's me not getting it - even though I would only be playing it during holidays anyway (could get it on the cheap for Easter I guess).

A great pity, even more so considering the official forums have been asking since Day 1 for more in depth game play (slash and hack, plus units on speed = urgh...) and more maps (and as such a larger campaign) and more characters and more classes.

"The Mage is a ludicrously overpowered demi-god, who eats abuse and poops out pine scented victory."

People have been saying that for months, the videos and demo have shown this.

"Understandably the Heroes/Villains on offer are shoehorned into the four basic classes, but whereas some of them are natural fits, others don’t really make canon sense."

Would have been a lot easier had Pandemic used more natural LOTR classes and not gone for fantasy stereotypes. Again, plenty of threads moaning about this.

6.5 is a C grade pretty much. Very, very avoidable.

uuh... what a dissapointment:( I'm also a singleplayer, and the campaign was the thing I've been looking forward to play. Now it seems that Conquest is more of a multiplayer/online game so I guess I won't buy this game.

this is really sad... I was looking forward to play a long and epic campaign "with all the battles from the movies and also few mentioned in the books"

heh.. what was I thinking.. of course I'm dissapointed, it's made by EA:-/

You are the only one that know how nice you think the game is :p.

I didn't read him full at the moment.

It is not... anyway, I did enjoy the demo, but I can understand a lot of the points made there. Aside from the melee combat it doesn't really set it self apart from the rest.

krapyl:

Hmmm...they confirmed Ringbearer mode in this rewiew btw, but not strongholds :/

Freek:

"Capture the Ring" = Capture the Flag
Ringbearer is not included, neither is Strongholds.

krapyl:

Whats this then?? :/

All modes support 16 players (eight a side) and you can also play co-op online or via good old fashioned split-screen. Lastly, there is a new ‘Ring Bearer’ mode, where one player plays as Frodo and everyone else is a Nazgûl. The general idea here being: slay the halfwit Halfling, take his place, and accrue points until you cop a Morgul blade in the back of the head yourself.

Teregond:

The thing you all need to remember about reviews is they are not solid gospel on how good the game is.
reviews are just someone telling you thier opinion on what thier experience with the product was, in this case a game. I always find I may enjoy a game no matter how bad the review, they're just trying to help to decide on weather to buy it or not.
I've found from the demo that I throughly enjoyed the game and I don't care that its similar to Star Wars:Battlefront because that was a really good game there's no shame in saying its just that with LOTR painted on top.

it didnt come out for new jersey!

FaceCake:

yea, i could care less. Im not going to follow a game review. Almost everyone said gears of war 2 was amazing, but i find it to be just.....meh.

It's always up to personal taste :) A game can actually be crap or mediocre but still a lot of fun. When I was playing the demo I wasn't thinking "God this is an excellent game, I've never played better" but it was one of the most fun and enjoyable games I played in a while. The only other game that comes close on my PS3 hours spent table is GTA IV.

Lotr Lover:

i dont think theres 4 player co-op in conquest for xbox! bestbuy said 2

nerdygiant:

there is 4 player co op for xbox i can garintee it but i can't belive i have to wait another day!!!! it's ok i think it's worth the wait

Cheeky Hobbit:

Guys, why so downbeat? You can't talk of disappointment just because one reviewer gave the game an average score. This game has also been given an 8/10 and a 7.9/10 respectively. :)
