We haven’t reported a lot of news on the production of the two new Tolkien movies,  but with news on the Lord of the Rings: Conquest going slow, news on the other LotR products in production should be refreshing.

In an online chat with fans via BD Live!, Del Toro spilled some beans on the progress of the two new movies. The director revealed that the Hobbit will start shooting in 2010, and that it will last for “370 days or so”. This would put a release of the movies in 2011 and 2012 respectively, although this might be somewhat optimistic — the post-production efforts required for these movies would be significant.

The exact contents of the second movie remain somewhat clouded in mystery, though it is generally assumed that it will be somesort of a bridge between the events in the Hobbit and Fellowship of the Ring, possibly involving the efforts of the White Council against the evil from Dol Guldur’s Necromancer.

m@tt:

Nothing new. He hinted that Bilbo will be announced soon, but I doubt it.

Nazzie:

I don't see why they can't bring back the guy who played bilbo in the last movie.

Teregond:

because Ian Holm is in his seventies lol he's getting on a bit.

zach:

Yea way too old to be traveling across middle earth.

Mithrandir7:

They need a young hobbit sadly... and I can't think of anyone better than Ian =[

Joe:

I think Del Toro is a good candidate for making The Hobbit. Especially with Peter Jackson as his producer. Peter will no doubt have a significant effect on the film. ^^

LegolasGreenleaf:

I will agree with Joe!
Does eny1 know who will be the actors in these movies and i havent understood the theme??Shall be any fight or it will be just a "simple"movie????

Joe:

If you are asking if it will have battles, then yes. The battle of the five army's is a big one, with smaller fights like Bilbo versus the Spiders of Mirkwood.

There are only rumored actors. These are Andy Serkis (Who played Gollum) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf) .

Gondor General:

I am Joyed to hear that Peter Jackson will be the Producer, as I just can't picture a cinematic Middle-earth, without his vison, that was fleshed out by Weta in his Lord of the Rings trilogy.

And I pray that Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis reprise their roles for these films!

They're already signed on.

Freek:

Those are the only two CONFIRMED actors, and most others have stated that they are willing to reprise their role, should they be asked. Problem ofcourse is the age :)

Christoper Lee (Saruman) is the only actor who is not likely to appear because he doesn't want to travel to New Zealand, though he has been rumored to be cast as the voice of Smaug.

Joe:

That would be pretty interesting.
Thanks for the info.
