Movie site ‘The Digital Bits’ reports that the Lord of the Rings trilogy is heading to Blu-ray, and might arrive as early as next year. Warner Bros “announced” the arrival of LotR in the HD age in an inlay that came with the Poltergeist Blu-ray release. Furthermore, all three movies would arrive on the new format next year:

What’s more, our industry sources tell us that ALL THREE Lord of the Rings films are planned for release in Blu in 2009, though we’re not yet certain if the discs will be the theatrical editions, the extended editions or both.

Blu-ray is commonly regarded as the sucessor to the succesful DVD format, after it won the “format war” against Toshiba’s HD-DVD. Blu-ray offers a much larger storage capacity, as well as Full HD video (which equals a screen resolution of 1920×1080). To play the format you’ll need a blu-ray player as well as a HD-ready television. We’ll keep you up to date on the news.

Thanks to Bareandir for the heads-up!

Cool someone have a couple grand I can have for a new TV?

Freek:

I have a PC monitor with HDMI and 720p hooked up to my PS3... no upgrades for me :)

zach:

Well I got a PC monitor that 21 inch that I play xbox on at a higher res than 720 P. Although from my experience games fare better on smaller screens in HD than movies do. At least in my opinion, playing xbox on a SDTV then my PC monitor was a huge upgrade, and a movie in HD wasnt near as noticeable on my small screen. It could have just been the movie too though.

Freek:

I watch HD content all the time, and there is a clear difference between SDTV and HDTV. LotR looks great on DVD with my PS3 upscaling still, but blu-ray should be awesome.

Sweet, my parents are getting a new HD tv for the digital change in February, so I'm set :)

Bareandir:

Nice find

40" full-hd lcd from Samsung here, with my precious PS3 :P.

zach:

Wonder if they will let you buy it Digitally like some HD movies do now?

Digital FTW: In my opinion, dont need no fancy player, much more universal, I could play it on my pc, my xbox or for those of you with PS3's your PS3. Only problem is some people may not have enough HD space, but external HD's are cheap as heck. You can get like 300 GB for less than $100.

FaceCake:

samsung 40 inch 1080pi. Gonna be epic! But also going to cost like, 100 dollars for all 3 movies.

Ayodon:

I got a 52" 1080p plasma panasonic I wonder how it would look on there

Actually I would guess closer to $120.

There's nothing as good as owning a physical copy of your favourite movies imho. Besides, BD discs can hold up to 25GB each. Even if each movies were to released on a single disc each, this would still add up to 75GB. Lastly, you need a powerful PC to play 1080p content. My own rig which is by now about 3 years old can play 720p fine, but don't try to skip ahead or fast forward :(

sry, i do use an antenna tv

my parents are about the cheapest people you will ever meet. Don't have wireless internet, use dsl connection (finally upgraded from dial-up about 2 months ago), no laptops, a tv from the 80's, finally got a dvd player about 4 months ago, no cable or satalite, and finally, no one in my family has a cell phone. All in all, my parents are cheap and don't like upgrading.

Freek:

Hey... we got a 1994 "fishtank" TV. It's uber... and the power knob doesn't work :P

My dad has a point though, he doesnt want to upgrade until it a) breaks down b) there are actual HD channels outside Discovery HD. SDTV looks crap on a HDTV imho.

But we do have digital cable, and 20mbit cable.

Samus1111111:

My dad doesn't want to replace out tv, even after it breaks down, but then my mom wouldn't be able to watch her shows :P
