There have been several rumors floating around that have been submitted to TORn about the possible actor to play Bilbo. Peter Jackson and Del Toro said they agree on the actor and these rumors state James McAvoy as that actor. Del Toro stated that it will be another year before they really start casting, but we may get an announcement of who will be playing Bilbo soon, due to the fact that Bilbo is one of the main characters.

He played the Doctor in 'The Last King of Scotland' and The Faun creature in the first Narnia film. Not the biggest actor, but then again from what the last LoTR showed us, stars are made from these films-not casted for their fame, didn't know hardly any of the actors from the LoTR and now I see them a lot in various things, hell-even the same for PJ himself.

I think it's better to use lesser known actors for things like this because you think less about the other movies you recognize them from and more about them being the character. That being said, I like the faun quite a bit in the Chronicles of Narnia so I think that doesn't sound like a bad choice at all.

Hrm, I think McAvoy would do well, though I think Bilbo's role rightfully belongs to Ian Holm.

Kind've hard for him to play Bilbo this time, way too old I'm afraid :( Although its said he might return for the Hobbit sequel (or the prequel to FoTR, whichever you prefer)

Few years ago he was nobody. Found fame in Shameless and has since done that film with Keira Knightly among others. He is a decent actor, I can see him as a hobbit, though not sure as Bilbo.
