Turbine and Tolkien Enterprises have reached a new agreement for the rights on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ books, as well as ‘the Hobbit’. WHat this means is that the current license has been extended to 2014, with a further option to extend it further to 2017.

“We’re thrilled with the global success of The Lord of the Rings Online since its launch in 2007. With the recent announcement of what are sure to be two blockbuster films based on The Hobbit and a sequel, we expect the success of the license and our relationship with Tolkien Enterprises to grow for years to come,” said Jim Crowley, president and CEO of Turbine.

The extension of the rights does not only mean a lot of potential updates and expasions to the Lord of the Rings Online, but also future Lord of the Rings, or even ‘the Hobbit’ games by Turbine.

Do note this only involves the rights to the literary works by J.R.R. Tolkien, and not the (upcoming) movie adaptions by Peter Jackson. The Lord of the Rings Online was launched in 2007, and has received 4 free content updates thus far, with at least 2 more in the works.

Hasnt Turbine only made MMO's?

It would be nice for them to create an non MMO, lotr game though...

Freek:

The fact that they have, doesn't mean they won't :)

I dont see them competing with their own MMO. Then again, they might give LotRO a huge overhaul for the hobbit in 3 or 4 years.

What would be cool, is to use the same servers, but when you log into your server, there is a button:
-Proceed the the War of the Ring
-Proceed to The Hobbit
It would be similar to Monster Play, except you make a character just like the regular game.

Freek:

Nah, I doubt that would work.
